Kakching is a city and a municipal council in Thoubal district in the Indian state of Manipur. It is situated in the southeastern part of Manipur
Historical Growth of the town : There is little information about the early history of Kakching town. During the pre war period Kakching was the growth centre of the surrounding villages. On the 10th May 1942 Manipur experienced the shock of the Second World War. Kakching was also suffered destruction by the Japanese bombardment as there is airfield of the Allied force. After the devastation, Kakching was rebuilt with better means of communication and the new angle of socio - economic condition.
During 1959-60 Kakching was developing very fast from the level of Growth center. Kakching was declared as notified area in 1959-60 and the first small town committee election was held in 1968-69. On 24th November 1979, Kakching was upgraded to the level of Municipal town and constitution of Municipal Board in March 198_ under the Assam Municipal Act 1923 as extended to Manipur. Now Kakching is the second largest town in Manipur next to Imphal City. So with the increase in the activities and status of the town the population is also increasing gradually. After reorganisation of the central District, Kakching may be selected as Sub Divisional Headquater of district HQ of Thoubal District and with the completion of Sekmai barrage there may be substantial increase of growth of the town. So there must be demand of essential commodities educational and medical facilities and ohter community service.

Bed sheets, Chadars, Phaneks, Mosquito nets, Bamboo baskets, Mats and other can works , Fishing nets, Furniture, Carpentry products, Pottery articles, etc."
